Film Buddy provides first employment opportunities on Sky Studios Supernatural Thriller 'The Rising'
Sky Studios new supernatural thriller is the latest destination for our recent graduates. Film Buddy teamed up with the Locations Department while filming in Delamere Forest and Buxton in Derbyshire to provide entry level employment for recent graduates at Leeds Beckett University and the University of Liverpool.
These kind of opportunities are created to introduce emerging talent into the industry and with the expected short fall of crew in the UK over the next twelve months, Film Buddy continues to establish itself as a leading provider of work ready talent.
Hear from Ben Barter about his experiences with Film Buddy and working on the show.
Ben Barter – University of Liverpool graduate.
“Since signing up to Film Buddy in my third year of University I was immediately exposed to so many recourses informing me about the film/television industry. This was not only online information but also the opportunity to be in contact with the helpful people working at Film Buddy. The best thing for me personally about using Film Buddy has been the constant contact I have had with Ben Sweet; I have been able to email and chat to him on the phone regularly which has enabled me to massively improve my CV and understanding about the industry. This has consequently led to me getting paid work on three different big studio productions, these include a new tv show created by Sky Studios, a program created for CBBC and a well-known BBC tv drama. I am so grateful to the guys at Film Buddy and am very excited to see what I can do next with my career in film and television!”

The Rising is the first series produced entirely in-house from Sky Studios, Sky’s production and development arm, who are working with executive producer Julian Stevens, producer of The Fall (BBC Two) and Informer (BBC Two).
The Rising is the story of Neve Kelly (Rugaard), who discovers that she is dead. She’s scared and confused by this new existence. But, when she realises she has been murdered, she’s furious. She’s determined to find her killer and get justice, believing that it was someone she knew.
Impulsive and restless, Neve regrets never leaving her isolated community. And, as she comes to terms with her abilities, she begins to destabilise the lives of those she left behind. Particularly her estranged father, Tom and her beloved mother Maria (Emily Taaffe).
Neve is a disruptive, unsettling hero who should not exist, and she needs to find her purpose. She takes us through the investigation into her death, going where the police can’t. In the process she uncovers deeply buried secrets and is forced to re-examine everything about her life and the people she cared about.
With nothing to lose but time, Neve will push for the truth even when it hurts. Her return forces everyone around her to change, confess, or start covering their tracks. But, it also reveals that there are others like her out there…
With a distinctive tone and visual style, The Rising is a story about love, justice and the cost of pursuing the truth in a world that wants to keep it hidden.
The series is set to star a fresh line up of young emerging talent including Clara Rugaard (I Am Mother) as protagonist Neve, Nenda Neururer (A Brief History of Struggle) as the irreverent Alex Wyatt who has recently returned to the area after three years away and Solly McLeod (Boxing Day) as Joseph Wyatt, Alex’s cousin and Neve’s longstanding boyfriend. Emily Taaffe (Rare Beasts), Alex Lanipekun (Spooks) and Robyn Cara (Ackley Bridge) are also set to star.

The story of Neve takes audiences on a journey from mystery, suspense and horror, all set to the stunning scenic backdrop of The Lake District.”
Jane Millichip, Chief Content Officer, Sky Studios said, “Following a successful production collaboration on The Third Day, The Rising is the first series to be produced entirely in-house at Sky Studios. It re- enforces our ambition and commitment to building high-quality production capability that sits alongside our work with independents. It’s fantastic to be working with Julian Stevens and a world-class team of established and emerging talent, who are delivering a fresh and impactful take on the supernatural genre.”
Julian Stevens, Executive Producer for The Rising said “The unique concept behind The Rising grabbed me instantly. It’s a powerful story with a strong and unexpected protagonist at the heart of it. We explore subverting tropes throughout, giving agency to our central character and allowing much of narrative to be told from her perspective. It’s a pleasure to be working with Sky and our brilliant team on such a compelling and dynamic show.”
