BSC Director of Photography Laurie Rose.
Born in East London, Laurie Rose gained an art school training in North London.
Disenchanted but having consolidated a love for creativity towards a goal, after many odd jobs and a move to Brighton, he started from the ground up in British independent television, eventually leaping behind a TV camera for 10 years. The first break into narrative work came almost by accident in meeting director Ben Wheatley in 2009.
They began a narrative journey together that culminated in 2020 with Netflix’s REBECCA.
From low budgets with high ambitions to one of the most fascinating and beloved stories in English literature, Laurie has an ever-developing passion for combining story with the moving image, which has led to collaborations with some of the most exciting directors in Europe and America.
“For me it’s resolutely about learning and collaboration – joining with wonderful, like-minded people to find ways to bring a story to glorious life, together..”
Proposed as a Full Member by Oliver Curtis BSC in 2016, joining the Society has been the crowning accomplishment in his career so far – “..I genuinely used to joke with colleagues, about gaining the hallowed initials ‘BSC’, and never in a million years imagined I would even come close to earning my place. But I’m the proudest member, I still get butterflies at the thought of my wonderful peers and of the legacy that precedes us. And even prouder to have served on the Board as a Governor since 2019..”
Laurie won a BAFTA for Photography and Lighting for BBC’s LONDON SPY (2015)
HIGH RISE (2015), FREE FIRE (2016), JOURNEY’S END (2017), OVERLORD (2018), STAN AND OLLIE (2018), PET SEMATARY (2019) REBECCA (2020)
Laurie still lives in Brighton, with his ever supporting wife and two children but regularly works wherever he can find the best collaborators with great stories…
